2010 Program Highlights at the MuseumsQuartier Wien


Press release: VIENNA, Austria, December 18 - As one of the world's largest centers for contemporary art and culture with more than 60 different art and culture facilities, the MuseumsQuartier Wien will once again be offering a number of cultural highlights in 2010. The selection ranges from visual and performing arts to architecture, music, fashion, theatre, dance, literature, children's culture, and digital culture.
In quartier21, a creative cluster for 21st-century art and culture that offers space and support to small and medium-sized cultural initiatives within the MuseumsQuartier, the freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL program series that was successfully launched in October 2009 will be continued. Its first two exhibitions attracted about 10,000 visitors before the end of 2009. After exhibitions on design from Central Europe and fashion from Italy ("50(plus or minus) anni di moda italiana", on view until January 20), the next show, "Digital Material Luzern" (February 11 to March 21) will present digital culture from Switzerland. More exhibitions on fashion, design, and digital culture are planned for the future.
The reading series LiteraturQuartier21, with writers like Lida Winiewicz, Jurgen Ernst, Julian Schutting, Christine Velan, Peter Slavik, and Rosa Pock, will continue through the end of March. Additional highlights are "Tricky Women 2010", an animated film festival for women from March 4 to 8, and the short film festival "VIS Vienna Independent Shorts" from May 27 to June 2. "MQ VIENNA FASHION WEEK" is scheduled for September 22 to 26.
In addition, "Sommer im MQ" will be launched on April 29 with "Kons goes proms", an event in cooperation with the Vienna Conservatory. The projected start date for the "Winter im MQ" event series is November 18.
The big museums and exhibition halls in the MuseumsQuartier Wien have plenty to offer as well. The LEOPOLD MUSEUM, for instance, is presenting "Giacometti - Cezanne - Picasso", a show with selected works from Fondation Beyeler Collection, from September 17 to January 17, 2011. There will also be exhibitions featuring "watercolor masterpieces" (February 26 to May 24) and the art of "Joseph Maria Olbrich" (June 11 to September 27).
At MUMOK - Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, the exhibition "Changing Channels" (March 5 to June 6) is a creative exploration of television as a mass medium, while "Ideas in Painting" (March 26 to October 3) is about discursive painting. A show called "Hyper Real: Realism in Painting and Photography" is also planned (October 22 to February 13, 2011).
KUNSTHALLE wien is presenting "Tropicalia", a survey of the 1960s in Brazil (January 29 to May 2). Other important exhibitions are "The Street as Studio: From Basquiat to Banksy" (June 25 to October 10) and "POWER UP: Female Pop Artists" (November 5 to February 20, 2011).
At the Architekturzentrum Wien, the oeuvre of Arbeitsgruppe 4 will be presented for the first time in a show called "Holzbauer, Kurrent, Spalt" (March 4 to May 31). "Best of Europe: Mies van der Rohe Award 2009" will present top submissions for this important architecture competition (June 24 to September 13).
Tanzquartier Wien will be presenting outstanding national and international productions throughout the year. A special highlight is the Austrian premiere of "KONTAKTHOF mit Teenagern ab 14" with "Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch" from Germany (February 26 & 27). Another exciting performance is "La Pornographie des ames" with "Dave St. Pierre" from Canada (March 9 & 10).
At Halle E+G, Streetdance will be performing "Bounce - Insane in the Brain" at the beginning of the year (January 4 to 17). The annual "Wiener Festwochen festival" will return in May and June (May 14 to June 16).
There will also be lots of exciting programs and events for kids and teens in 2010. "Ha Zwei Ooo" is an interactive exhibition on water at ZOOM Kindermuseum from March to August. The theater for young audiences DSCHUNGEL WIEN will be hosting the Austrian premiere of the Australian production "Hoods" on the occasion of the "World Day of Theater for Children and Young People" (March 20). "Das ist mein Ding!" is a coproduction with the Wiener Festwochen (June 5). And as always, wienXtra-Kinderinfo has lists and brochures available on more than 60 topics relating to recreation for children.
