UN "Photos of Risk" Contest

United Nations Photo, photography competition, UN, United Nations, Nepal, Diana Topan, Photography News, photo news, photo contest, photo competition, documentary photography, photojournalismNepal is at high risk of natural hazards such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, fires, cyclonic winds, hailstorms, and drought which can lead to hunger and epidemic outbreaks in their aftermath.

An international Consortium of ADB, IFRC, UNDP, UNOCHA, UNISDR, and World Bank was formed in May 2009 to support the Government of Nepal in developing a Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan building on the new National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management (NSDRM). The Consortium, with the Government of Nepal and civil society organizations, identified disaster risk reduction priorities that are both urgent and viable within the current institutional and policy arrangements in the country.

Five flagship areas of immediate intervention for disaster risk management in Nepal were selected:

1. School and hospital safety: structural and non-structural aspects of making schools and hospitals earthquake resilient
2. Emergency preparedness and response capacity
3. Flood management in the Koshi river basin
4. Integrated community based disaster risk reduction/management
5. Policy/Institutional support for disaster risk management

Visualising and understanding this risk and communicating it to both the general public and decision makers is important and urgent. In this regard, the Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC) has organized this photo contest under the theme “Photos of Risk” to advance risk reduction by using photographs as a means to communicate key hazards.

In order to ensure widespread dissemination, winning photographs will be used in presentations, publications, website and a traveling photo exhibition.

The objective of this photo competition is to raise awareness and to advocate for the need to address risk throughout the country.

Prizes:

First prize: NRs. 50,000

Second prize: NRs. 30,000

Third prize: NRs. 15,000

Twenty additional Special Mention prizes of NRs. 5,000 each will also be awarded. Prize winning photos will be curated into a traveling exhibition that will commence after the contest period.

It seems like a great opportunity for photographers who got the chance to shoot in Nepal. I wish I was one of them.
