PHOTOS: Ghostly Chernobyl to Open to Tourists

December 14, 2010 /PN/ Following the Chernobyl disaster that occurred on 26 April 1986, Ukraine continued to operate the remaining reactors at Chernobyl for many years. The last reactor at the site was closed down 10 years ago today, on 14 December 2000.

Beginning next year, Ukraine will lift restrictions on tourism around the Chernobyl reactor,  formally opening the scene of the world's worst nuclear accident to visitors, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.

The area remains heavily contaminated, but officials say tours will cover the main sights while steering clear of the dangerous spots.
